He was a poet who challenged the conventions and traditions of Malayalam poetry and created a new poetic language and vision.
One of the most popular poems by Kakkad is Saphalamee Yathra, which means Successful Journey in Malayalam. It is a long poem that narrates the poet's life journey from childhood to old age, with all its joys and sorrows, hopes and disappointments, achievements and failures. The poem is divided into seven sections, each representing a stage of life. The poet uses various metaphors and symbols to convey his experiences and emotions. He also addresses God as a friend and a guide, who helps him in his journey.
Another famous poem by Kakkad is Pathalathinde Muzhakkam, which means The Struggle in the Underworld in Malayalam. It is a political poem that criticizes the social and economic inequalities, corruption and oppression in the society. The poet compares the life of the poor and the oppressed to that of the underworld, where they suffer from hunger, disease, violence and injustice. He also exposes the hypocrisy and selfishness of the rich and the powerful, who exploit and manipulate the masses. The poem is a call for revolution and liberation of the downtrodden.
A third poem by Kakkad that deserves mention is Changatham, which means Epic in Malayalam. It is a historical poem that celebrates the life and achievements of Kunjali Marakkar, a naval chief of the Zamorin of Calicut, who fought against the Portuguese invaders in the 16th century. The poem depicts the heroism, patriotism and bravery of Kunjali Marakkar and his men, who defended their land and culture from foreign aggression.
